What Viral Marketing and Link Baiting Have in Common
Viral marketing and link baiting are two very effective strategies for increasing traffic to your website and, in turn, improving your sales. But, what do these strategies have in common and how can you determine which is right for you?
Viral marketing can be somewhat more difficult to set up than link baiting, since the goal of link baiting is simply to encourage others to create a link to your website. Therefore, you only need to dangle something attractive in front of the face of the web user – such as an interesting article, a funny joke, or a useful Internet tool – and you will likely get the link you desire.
Viral marketing, on the other hand, is a bit different. With viral marketing, you use social networks that are already in place in order to help improve awareness about your site. In essence, Internet viral marketing is a “word of mouth” process that takes place in the virtual world.
The best marketing strategy will utilize a two-fold approach that takes advantage of both of these strategies. For example, you can drop links within a chat room or on forums that will encourage others to visit your site. If you have something of use to this person, he or she just might create a link to your site. This helps you build your inbound links.
Even if the person doesn’t create a link to your site, however, encouraging others to visit your site just might result in gaining a new customer. And, if your site is impressive enough, he or she will likely tell others about your site.
So, when creating links to your site within pre-existing social networks, keep your goal in mind. Are you looking to spread the word about your site, to encourage others to build links to your site, or both? Once you have determined your purpose, make sure the link you provide leads the user to something on your site that will accomplish this goal.
